Trail Built exists because most gear "reviews" online are just repackaged spec sheets and Amazon listings. We got tired of reading about gear that nobody had actually used, so we started testing everything ourselves — on real trails, in real conditions, across real miles.
Since 2023, we've driven over 50,000 miles testing overlanding gear, from recovery kits in the Mojave to rooftop tents in the Cascades. Every product recommendation on this site reflects first-hand experience or rigorous research from trusted sources in the overlanding community.
Our Team
Editorial Standards
We don't accept free products from manufacturers in exchange for reviews. We don't let affiliate relationships influence our ratings. If something breaks on the trail, we say so. Our goal is to help you make the right gear decision — not to maximize clicks.
- We test before we recommend. Products featured as top picks have been field-tested or researched extensively.
- We update our reviews. Gear changes, new models ship, prices shift — we revisit articles regularly.
- We're transparent about limits. If we haven't tested something personally, we say so and explain our research methodology.
How We Test
Every product recommendation on Trail Built is backed by one of two things: direct field testing by our team, or rigorous research from trusted sources when we haven't personally run the gear. Here's exactly what our testing process looks like.
Field Testing Criteria
When we test gear ourselves, we evaluate it across four dimensions: performance under load (does it do what it claims when conditions get hard?), durability (how does it hold up after repeated use and trail abuse?), ease of use (can you operate it solo, in the dark, under stress?), and value (does the price reflect the real-world utility?).
Testing Conditions
Our team has logged over 50,000 combined trail miles across the American Southwest, Pacific Northwest, and Rocky Mountain West. We test recovery gear in actual recovery situations — not staged pulls in a parking lot. We test fridges on multi-day trips where battery management is a real constraint. We test light bars on dark forest roads and desert washes where visibility actually matters.

Research-Based Reviews
For products we haven't personally tested, we're transparent about it. We rely on long-term owner reports from the overlanding community, manufacturer specifications, independent lab data where available, and input from professional off-road guides and expedition drivers. We never present research-based assessments as first-hand testing.
No Free Gear Policy
We do not accept free products from manufacturers in exchange for reviews. Every product we recommend was purchased at retail or borrowed from a fellow overlander with no strings attached. This policy is non-negotiable — it's the only way to give you an honest verdict.
